Chiloha
A Traditional Hawaiian Treat, Rooted in the Islands, Served in the Windy City
The Story…
Aloha! My name is Lake Linebaugh and my desire to bridge distant aspects of my life led me to create Chiloha, my solar-powered shave ice business. Growing up on Kaua’i inspired me to share a traditional island treat with Chicago. I engineered my grandfather’s old (1974) red Volkswagen bus into a functioning food truck. Although the sweet treat consists of simple ingredients, calculating the energy demands was far from simple. With experience from leveraged skills from my Google IT Support Certificate, AP Computer Science, Girls Who Code, programming for Supernova Networks and weeks of research, I calculated a required 800W minimum. To meet the demand, I installed four 100W panels across the roof, wired to a 200Ah lithium-ion battery, and a 1000W pure sine wave inverter. Chiloha blends my three worlds: the sustainability of an Indiana farm, the community of Kaua‘i, and the innovation I found in Chicago.

Chiloha has flavors that taste good and do good!!
Every part, from solar power to compostable cups is rooted in sustainability and my hope to redefine the web of kinship and ecology.
Since 2024, I have centered the development of Chiloha around sustaining the systems that sustain us.
On behalf of Chiloha, I encourage you to reflect on your own energy consumption!
